Who we are
Rewiring Australia is on a mission to electrify everything - to replace all fossil fuel-based machines with efficient, electric ones powered by renewable energy. Electrification offers households a pathway to eliminate emissions while reducing energy bills. We build robust research and modelling – to create a finance policy that can help more Australians electrify their homes.
What we do
Rewiring Australia works to empirically demonstrate the value and opportunity of electrification in terms of cost savings for energy consumers, emissions reductions, and improved efficiency across the energy network. We advocate for and support rapid and mass electrification across homes and businesses. We work to show the economic and environmental benefits of electrifying our homes, businesses and economies. We push to do two things well that are rarely done together. We do research and analysis alongside the critical storytelling and communications required to build trust. Our policy work is about moving the most considerable possible levers of government by embedding climate action in federal budgets and tax law.
There are four core pillars to our work:
Communications: The widespread shift to electrification requires millions of homes and businesses to replace 100 million fossil-fuel machines.
- Action: We utilise our trusted brand to create communication campaigns that inspire households to plan their electrification journey. Our campaigns present the economic, health, and environmental benefits in a practical and accessible manner for Australian communities.
Advocacy: Our current energy system, along with its associated policies, regulations, and funding, is primarily designed for a world reliant on fossil fuels.
- Action: We actively engage with all levels of government, members of parliament, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to advocate for comprehensive reforms in the energy system. Our goal is to support rapid decarbonisation through electrification.
Data-driven research: Our advocacy and communication efforts are backed by thorough data analysis.
- Action: We collect data from various sources, including economic, energy consumption, demographic, and emissions data. This helps us build a compelling case for electrification and develop our leading research findings, which have informed global policies and programs.
Mobilisation: Mass adoption of electrification requires millions of homes and businesses to replace 100 million petrol and gas machines.
- Action: We actively support electrification efforts nationwide and assist 55 communities and various local councils in mobilising these initiatives. We are leading the world’s first community-initiated pilot for a fully electrified suburb, E2515. This project aims to electrify 500 homes and will serve as a case study for Australia to learn from and share insights on implementing electrification initiatives globally.
Our work
Australia's first community-led electrification pilot
PlatformsDr Saul Griffith and the Rewiring Australia team champion real-world cases of community electrification to fast-track our solar electric future. When a group of passionate locals in the 2515 postcode of NSW’s Illawarra region met Saul, they turned this idea of an electric community into a huge community campaign.

PlatformsRewiring Australia is on a mission to electrify everything as it is the fastest way to address the climate crisis while significantly reducing household energy bills. We have released a key part of our electric vision for Australia - The Electrify Everything Loans Scheme (EELS).

PlatformsWhile Rewiring Australia advocates for the big changes needed from government and industry to ensure electrification can be done fairly, equitably and rapidly at scale, we know that community groups across Australia are getting on with the job. We want to build a national electrification movement and community groups are leading the charge.
