"Sustainable Impact" is a 2026 report from Social Traders exploring how not-for-profits (NFPs) build social enterprises that generate their own revenue rather than relying on ongoing funder support. Drawing on a dataset of over 671 certified social enterprises and in-depth interviews, the report identifies four Australian NFPs that successfully created financially sustainable social enterprises, and examines what they have in common.
The report presents four detailed case studies, spanning a hospitality training program for asylum seekers, two op shops funding affordable housing, an HR compliance platform, and a multi-business operation supporting a local community. From these, it draws out four recurring themes: the importance of hiring leaders with genuine business experience, the strategic and often essential role of volunteers, the need for funding matched to each stage of an enterprise's growth, and an evolving but ongoing relationship between the social enterprise and its parent NFP.
Readers will gain practical insight into how social enterprises actually reach financial sustainability, which the report shows takes multiple years and rarely follows a single blueprint. It sets out specific recommendations for NFPs launching or running a social enterprise, as well as for funders considering how to structure seed and capacity-building support at different stages of an enterprise's lifecycle. The report also flags open questions for future research, including failure rates and the role of scale.
This resource speaks directly to not-for-profit leaders considering launching a social enterprise, social enterprise practitioners, and funders and philanthropic organisations deciding how best to support the sector.
