View resourceSummary
This report from The University of Queensland offers a detailed examination of social enterprise growth in Queensland. It is one of the first comprehensive Australian studies to systematically analyse the factors that support social enterprise development and long-term performance.
The research uses a mixed-methods approach. It combines in-depth interviews with social enterprise leaders and a large-scale survey. This method provides both detailed qualitative insights and broader data to test and validate findings across the sector.
A key strength of the study is its focus on social enterprises that are often under-represented in research. This includes regional enterprises, start-ups, and Indigenous-led social enterprises. By including these perspectives, the report presents a more inclusive and realistic picture of how social enterprises operate and grow in Queensland.
The study uses a competitive capability lens to understand growth. This means it looks at the organisational capabilities that help enterprises move from early start-up stages to stable or high-growth phases. The report identifies eight core capabilities that participants consistently linked to sustained growth and resilience. These capabilities relate to understanding beneficiary needs, customer service and client relationship building, financial management and governance.
