Purpose as the Foundation of Good Governance

This is a webinar hosted by the Good Governance Academy, featuring Danielle Duell, founder and CEO of People with Purpose, discussing purpose as the foundation of good governance. Duell introduces the "implementation gap", the distance between organisations stating a purpose and actually operating by it, and argues this is a problem of practice rather than intent.

She presents her Purpose in Practice framework, describing purpose as a stone dropped in water, with strategy, operations, leadership, culture, communications, innovation and measurement radiating outward as ripples, and governance as the outer ring that holds the whole system steady. She then sets out seven practical governance behaviours boards can adopt, such as opening board papers with a purpose connection statement, tracking a purpose dashboard, and setting non-negotiable "red lines" the organisation won't cross. Three case studies, a charity, a government body and a for-profit poultry producer, illustrate these behaviours across different sectors and contexts.

The session closes with an extended question and answer segment covering topics such as defining purpose statements, the difference between purpose, vision and mission, and aligning executive pay to purpose.
