Who we are
Stepping Stone is a Work Integration Social Enterprise based in Canberra. We provide employment and paid training opportunities to migrant and refugee women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds who face multiple barriers to formal employment.
Through two vibrant cafes and a growing catering business, we create inclusive, supportive workplaces that foster confidence, skills, and independence. Founded by Vanessa Brettell and Hannah Costello, Stepping Stone is driven by a commitment to social justice, cultural celebration, and economic empowerment.
What we do
We operate two social enterprise cafes—at Strathnairn Arts and in Dickson—as well as a catering business offering diverse, culturally inspired menus.
At the heart of our operations is a paid training and employment program that supports women from refugee and migrant backgrounds to develop hospitality and job-readiness skills. Our model combines real work experience, wraparound support, and community connection to help women thrive.
