Who we are

Seed & Signal is an independent advisory and training practice founded by Heather Chai, a former diplomat and sustainability adviser with more than 15 years’ cross-sector experience across Australia and the Indo-Pacific.

We help purpose-driven organisations turn sustainability, human rights and social impact commitments into practical action, stronger governance and credible outcomes.

Our work is guided by four core principles:

• Human-centred: we keep people, communities and stakeholders at the centre of sustainability, social impact and risk.

Heather leads Seed & Signal’s work across sustainability strategy, impact measurement, modern slavery and human rights, stakeholder engagement, responsible communication and SDG Impact Standards training. She is an Accredited Trainer for the SDG Impact Standards, accredited by UNDP and Social Value International.

We help organisations develop sustainability strategies, maturity diagnostics, roadmaps, materiality and saliency assessments, Theory of Change, impact frameworks, SDG integration, and governance uplift.

Impact measurement and outcomes frameworks

We support organisations to clarify intended outcomes, develop practical impact frameworks, identify meaningful indicators, and strengthen how they manage, demonstrate, and communicate impact.

Modern slavery, human rights and social risk management

We help organisations strengthen modern slavery and human rights due diligence, social risk assessments, policy development, supplier engagement, governance frameworks, reporting, and staff capability.

Stakeholder trust and responsible communication

We support credible sustainability and impact narratives, stakeholder engagement, executive positioning, communications planning, and messaging that avoids greenwashing or impact washing.

Training, workshops and capability building

We design and facilitate practical workshops, board and executive briefings, leadership masterclasses, employee engagement sessions, and SDG Impact Standards accredited training.

Responsible AI governance

We support organisations to understand and manage AI-related governance, human rights, procurement, and accountability risks.

Our Work

Seed & Signal works with organisations operating in complex, regulated and high-impact environments, including not-for-profits, purpose-driven organisations, aged care, healthcare, education, government, industry associations and mission-driven enterprises.

Examples of our work include supporting aged care and community services providers to strengthen sustainability strategy, prioritisation, governance and executive alignment. This work has helped organisations move from fragmented activity to clearer enterprise-wide approaches, practical roadmaps and stronger accountability.

We have also delivered sector capability-building on modern slavery and human rights risk. For the Medical Technology Association of Australia, Seed & Signal designed and delivered a national webinar helping MedTech organisations understand modern slavery risk, procurement expectations, due diligence and practical internal levers for action.

For the Australian Industry Group, Seed & Signal delivered training on Australia’s sustainability landscape and green business opportunities, supporting international students and emerging professionals to understand how sustainability priorities translate into business practice, policy and future career pathways.
