Who we are
Monkey Baa is a national Australian theatre company dedicated to creating extraordinary theatre for young audiences aged 3-13. For over 27 years, we’ve been producing shows that spark imagination, creativity, and a lifelong love of the arts. We believe that for many young people, our shows will be their first time at the theatre, and we make sure it’s a moment they will never forget—a story they will never forget.
Based in Sydney and Brisbane, Monkey Baa takes our productions on epic journeys across Australia and the world, visiting over 60 communities each year. We perform in bustling cities, but we prioritise reaching regional and remote towns where access to live theatre is limited. Through collaborations with schools, local groups, and charities, we work to ensure every young person can experience the joy of theatre, regardless of their background or where they live.
We have deep respect for young people as our audience of now—not just into the future—and we love working together to inform everything we do, including co-creating some of our most creative moments. Our commitment is to ensure that every child has a front-row seat to creativity.
What we do
Our core activities include:
- National and international touring: We bring theatre to both bustling cities and regional or remote towns where access to live performance is often limited.
- Accessible theatre: We collaborate with schools, local groups, and charities to ensure young people, regardless of their background or location, can experience the joy of theatre.
- Creative engagement: We offer educational workshops that connect students with the stories and themes of our productions, helping them engage creatively with the work.
- Youth involvement: Through internships, the Youth Advisory Council, and other initiatives, we provide opportunities for young people to actively participate in the artistic process, shaping our work and the future of the company.
- Breaking barriers: We focus on making the arts accessible to all children, especially those facing barriers such as geographic isolation, financial constraints, or limited exposure to the arts.
