Who we are
EllWords is a Naarm/Melbourne group of female editors and writers who help purpose-led organisations write 'good' to do good. From policies, reports and analysis to storytelling, content and copy, we want to help purpose-led organisations write effectively for impact through editing, copywriting and content writing.
EllWords is a group of empathetic, dedicated editors and writers supporting Australian clients to do good with good writing. Between us, we have a broad range of lived and professional experiences that we bring to our editing and writing work. Individually, we believe that social enterprise, circular economy and civic action will create a better future for everyone. And we want to help that happen through our work.
Founder and director Lee Ellwood is a Professional-level member of the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd) in Australian and New Zealand and the UK's Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). You'll also find her in the Rachel's List freelance writer community. Lee's past work in government, cultural, university, publishing and administrative environments gives her a broad understanding of many of our clients' fields, challenges and requirements.
Dr Penny Hayes is a skilled and experienced editor, researcher and consultant with a professional background in political studies and economics. She's a clear and engaging communicator with a particular interest in public policy, mental health and social change projects.
Kylie Howard left a 20+ career in family law to become a freelance editor and provides copyediting and proofreading to EllWords clients, particularly in the legal field.

What we do
Good writing - effective writing - gets your organisation opportunities. Opportunities to win funding, get approvals, boost engagement, win awards, influence policies, convince people. But when you're over-stretched or under-resourced, good writing can be hard to achieve.
As your on-call 'good writing group', we can edit, write and coordinate effective, impactful reports, business content and communications assets. Outsourcing the words to us frees you up to focus on strategy, planning, leadership and policy.
We can support your work with:
- all levels of text editing
- content and copywriting
- policy analysis, evaluation and consulting
- awards and grants writing
- connections to graphic designers, document formatters, PR professionals, communications strategists, SEO experts, translators, podcasters and journalists.
