First Nations Affairs: Climate, Country and our future

This learning community brings together representatives from Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) active in environmental care, land management, and climate adaptation initiatives.

About the learning community

This learning community convenes representatives from Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations working at the intersection of culture, environment, and climate action. It'll explore how traditional custodianship, governance, and community-driven models are maintaining climate resilience and sustainable economies across Country.

The shared aim is to strengthen the role of ACCOs in national and regional climate responses by amplifying community-led governance models, traditional ecological knowledge, and pathways for economic participation grounded in custodianship of Country.

Through structured dialogue, shared learning, and collaboration, the community focuses on:

  • Embedding cultural governance and local authority in environmental and climate decision-making.
  • Building organisational capability in climate-related program delivery, measurement, and finance.
  • Showcasing First Nations-led climate adaptation, biodiversity restoration, and regenerative enterprise models.
  • Supporting emerging ACCOs in rural and remote areas to activate people, land and strengthen community wellbeing through climate-aligned initiatives.

This learning community recognises that cultural authority and environmental care are inseparable. By creating space for collective learning, the aim is to strengthen networks, inform national frameworks, and demonstrate the leadership of First Nations communities in shaping Australia’s sustainable future.
