PermaQueer: Orienting futures

Orienting futures was a learning community for people working in social enterprise who wanted to explore new and better ways of doing things. It looked at how to care for people and the planet, understand power and systems, and learnt how to make real, lasting change — all while supporting emerging culturally and ecologically responsive practice in the social enterprise sector.

About the learning community

The purpose of this learning community was to:

  • Explore regenerative design in the social enterprise sector as a necessary practice in 2025.
  • Engage in brave conversations that unpack systems and power structures sustained by the social enterprise sector while equipping participants with tools and capabilities necessary for change.
  • Recognise the historical interventions that have framed the world we live in today and deepen our changemaking capacity as a collective.
  • Grow understanding of the ecological and social determinants of a thriving future including systems of violence that compromise it.
  • Shine a light on obligations to our planetary boundaries and identify decolonial practices of honouring these in culturally competent and reflexive ways.
  • Interrogate workplace, community and organisational norms in different fields of social enterprise engagement to better understand, develop and share regenerative practice.

PermaQueer was co-founded by Guy Ritani and Toad Dell to empower the Queer community with systems-thinking solutions. Now, it extends this approach to broader global challenges. As an education-focused organisation, PermaQueer supports Queer, POC, and vulnerable communities through permaculture education. It offers diverse courses exploring permaculture, queer theory, and systems thinking, ensuring accessibility for all.

How did this learning community work?

This learning community consisted of a three-part series, totalling 12 facilitated online sessions:

  • Part 1: 4 x 2.5-hour online sessions held in August 2025.
  • Part 2: 4 x 2.5-hour online sessions held in September/October 2025.
  • Part 3: 4 x 2.5-hour online sessions held in October/November 2025.

Full attendance was required for all 12 sessions, as this was a continuous learning series.
